THE Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare faces challenges in digitisation as most of its services are still paper-based, Deputy Minister Lovemore Matuke has said.

He said the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns had necessitated the need for digitalisation, but this was difficult to achieve due to inadequate resources and lack of access the internet.

He made the remarks following a donation of 160 computers by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) to his Ministry.

“It is important to note that most of our services in the Ministry are still paper-based in this era of digital revolution.

“This is caused by the lack of proper tools of trade, among them computers and internet connectivity.

“The Ministry has four technical departments operating in all 10 provinces of the country, which are Social Development, Disability Affairs, Labour Administration and Employment Services and Promotion,” he said.

He said as a social services provider, the Ministry is required to remain active and assist millions of people who require urgent assistance due to loss of income and livelihoods.

He commended POTRAZ for donating 160 computers to the Ministry.

“This donation comes in handy at a critical time when there is a need to enhance and widen the spectrum of Government services offered online.

“My Ministry has embraced the thrust to digitalise Government services as outlined in the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).”
