Social workers overwhelmed

Addressing the media in Harare yesterday to raise awareness on social work in Zimbabwe, the council’s chairman Mr Phillip Bohwasi said there were only 487 registered social workers. He attributed the shortage to massive brain drain and Government’s policy on job freezing rendering social workers jobless.

“We have so many cases happening in Zimbabwe warranting the services of social workers. These range from rape cases of minor children, abuse of women and children in any form and the need for counselling of child victims but most of these cases go unattended because of the shortage,” he said.

In realising and appreciating the role social workers play in communities, Zimbabwe will this year join 84 other nations in the world to commemorate the International Social Worker’s Day in Harare.
