Sodbury Rules the roost on soccer pitch

SODBURY High School might pride itself on academics, but the school has built an athletic tradition on the soccer pitch.

That achievement was put on display again on Saturday afternoon during the Zimbabwe Academy Championship of sports at the school grounds when Sodbury battled against other schools.

Zimbabwe Academy Championship of Sports is an annual event and brought together students from various schools to compete in a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship.

Speaking at the ceremony, one of Sodbury High School owners, Spencer Banda, who is the organiser of the historic competition, said the intention of the tournament is to help schoolchildren develop their skills.

“In terms of organisation, the schools did very well, we had an excellent tournament. We also saw traditional rivalries with a high level of competition among the youngsters, the competitiveness was very impressive to see.

“We are making history ladies and gentlemen, this is a massive meet for a schools sporting event. We certainly want to salute the heads, teachers and indeed parents for a job well done,” he said.

Banda also hailed the massive support that they got from other schools who came out in large numbers for the competition.

“We also want to salute parents from other schools for the massive support rendered to the tournament.

“I would also like to congratulate the winners and I was happy for us the hosts because we managed to get into the finals and won in boys volleyball, girls football and boys football,” he said.

The school will celebrate its 50th Golden Jubilee the year.
