THE Government is rolling out solar-powered science laboratories across Matabeleland South to improve access to practical learning and bridge the gap between rural and urban education.
The programme, which targets schools that previously operated without adequate science facilities, is expected to enhance the teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.
Several laboratories are at advanced stages of completion across the province, with the use of solar energy set to ensure a reliable electricity supply in remote areas not connected to the national grid.
The development comes as Matabeleland South prepares to host this year’s Independence Day celebrations in Maphisa.
Speaking during a tour of one of the schools last week, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Mr Moses Mhike, said the initiative is part of efforts by the Second Republic to improve learning conditions in all parts of the country.
“These solar-powered laboratories are a game-changer for our education sector, particularly in rural areas such as Matabeleland South,” said Mr Mhike.
“For a long time, learners here have been disadvantaged by the lack of adequate facilities, but we are now addressing that by ensuring access to modern science laboratories.”
He said the adoption of solar energy will guarantee uninterrupted learning.
“The use of solar power ensures that these laboratories remain operational at all times, which is critical for effective teaching and learning,” he said.
Mr Mhike said the investment in science infrastructure is aimed at improving learner outcomes and expanding opportunities in STEM fields.
Communities in the province have welcomed the development, which is expected to improve practical learning and pass rates in science subjects.
