A Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) soldier deployed to Beitbridge border post became the biggest loser on Boxing Day when he was beaten and disarmed by a rival suitor in a bushy area near Dulivhadzimu clinic.
The two were allegedly fighting over a woman.
Police arrested the rival suitor, only to find that he had already given the gun to another person.
They have since launched a manhunt to recover the weapon.
Sources close to the case yesterday said Private Chinyengetere was on duty when he decided to spend quality time with his lover.
He is said to have gone to Dulivhadzimu Bus Terminus where he met the woman.
They said the two then went to a bush behind the clinic.
Clifford Muchera, the rival suitor, unbeknown to them was watching.
“Muchera followed the two to the bush where a misunderstanding ensued over the woman.
“The two men started fighting, but Muchera was too powerful for the soldier. He assaulted him and disarmed him of his
AK-47 service rifle,” said the source.
The official said Muchera disappeared with the rifle leaving behind a loaded magazine.
Muchera allegedly gave the gun to a friend known as Moffat Makuyana.
Private Chinyengetere is reported to have later gained courage and alerted his superiors.
The matter was reported to the police who arrested Muchera by mid-morning yesterday but they could not recover the rifle from him.
Sources said that a manhunt had been launched for Makuyana.
The officer commanding Beitbridge district, Chief Superintendent Francis Phiri, said the matter was still under investigation.
“The matter is still under investigations. We cannot give details at the moment but we are making headway,” he said.
