A SOLDIER based at Headquaters 1 Infantry Brigade in Bulawayo died on the spot when his torso was crushed to a pulp by a speeding vehicle.
The incident occurred along the Harare-Bulawayo Road, near a Total Service Station, on Monday.
The vehicle first hit Corporal Tawanda Chimbeva, 37, an environmental health technician at 1 Brigade 1 Field Ambulance Company, before running over him.
The driver, Luckson Makandiwa, 50, was heading towards the city centre when the accident occurred at about 6.20PM.
1 Infantry Brigade Public Relations Officer Lieutenant Brian Mugova said Chimbeva was coming from the Bulawayo Polytechnic College when the car hit him.
“We’ve lost a very intelligent, non-commissioned officer who was so dedicated in everything he did. The force has lost someone who had potential to be very resourceful because he was 100 percent dedicated in all his duties,” said Mugova.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo said: “The driver may be charged with culpable homicide. We urge all drivers to take utmost care when on the roads in order to reduce the number of accidents occurring in our city.”
The Late Chimbeva’s sister, Rejoice Chimbeva, said: “I still go cold and numb when I think of my brother because he has died a painful death. No-one deserves to die that way.”
