Soldier locked up for murder

A Mudzi-based soldier who allegedly fatally assaulted a man over a US$1 debt has been locked up while his accomplice hanged himself after learning that police were looking for him.Kelvin Chiunye (22) of 22 Infantry Batallion in Mudzi Barracks appeared before a Mutoko magistrate recently facing murder charges. He was remanded in custody and ordered to seek bail at the High Court.

The State alleges that on November 26 this year Chiunye and his friend, Power Chigwikwi (28), were at Kondo Business Centre in Kotwa drinking beer. Chigwikwi had an altercation with Mavis Muchuva over a US$1 debt.

It is alleged Tauya Muzota intervened sparking a row with Chigwikwi. With the assistance of Chiunye, Chigwikwi allegedly assaulted Muzota until he fell unconscious.
