Somabula livestock farmer dealt blow by veld fire

Midlands Bureau

A Somabula cattle rancher on the outskirts of Gweru was left counting his losses after a veld fire destroyed his 400 bales of hay valued at US$14 000 over the weekend.

Mr Ndabezinhle Nkomo said he is now considering selling some of his over 200 cattle to minimise the expenses of buying feed.

“It is a huge loss and I am now in danger of losing more cattle due to the drought,” said Mr Nkomo.

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) said veld fires have so far destroyed 428 hectares in Somabula, mostly affecting livestock.
