SOMANDLA “Mafia” Ndebele’s camp has praised Alick Macheso’s management for offering him moral support at a time when he needed it most.
The two have been holding joint shows and their partnership is reportedly paying off, as evidenced by the current performances.
In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub on the sidelines of their recent show in Mbare, Ndebele spoke highly of Macheso’s management for forging an alliance with him.
“I can’t thank him enough for this gesture because he has made me realise my relevance,” he said. “I may be a seasoned musician, but there are times when we need a shoulder from a big brother like Macheso.”
“I know I might be a seasoned musician in my own right, but nothing beats the power of collaboration. Collaborations are critical because they provide variety for fans. As you know, fans need this kind of variety and value for their money. When two great musicians combine forces, variety is guaranteed, and this is the kind of support we have been longing for over the years.”
“With Baba Sharo, we go a long way back to the days when he was still living in Dzivaresekwa. We used to record at the same stable at Gramma Records, and I am glad we are still working together. Sharing the stage with him is something I have been yearning for over the years. It shows that we have something in common, and I enjoy it when fans sing along to our songs.”
The leader of the Denda Brothers, who used to hold a series of shows in remote and mining towns, believes he has the ability to delight fans in big cities with Macheso’s assistance.
“I know many people would say I am the type of guy who prefers holding shows in remote areas, but I am also big in the cities. I am glad that I now have a brother in Macheso, and I have been touring many parts of Zimbabwe as his supporting act.
I had to humble myself and partner with him for the success of my group and brand. I understand the power of collaborations because they are essential for the success of our brands.”
“I will continue doing my best for the sake of my success and the consistency needed in this profession,” he added.
On the other hand, Macheso praised Ndebele and his group for their professionalism, which is paying off.
“I have always respected other top musicians of Somandla Ndebele’s calibre because they have a track record that should be cherished for years. He is not only a guru in this business but also a role model to the youth out there. There is no way one can talk about sungura without mentioning him. He started recording in the 80s when I was still a band member at Khiama Boys. He has seen it all in this business, and I am glad that we are here today doing what we enjoy the most.”
“I am also someone who is open to working with anyone, and in this case with Soma, we just clicked because we have been in these trenches for ages. We can share with the world, but most of these memories centre on our journey in music.
It was not an easy road for us to be where we are today. We cried, laughed, and persevered together over the years in the trenches. I am glad to see him leading a team of vibrant stars.
His work ethic and professionalism continue to inspire many youngsters who look up to him as a role model,” stated Macheso.
As the money-spinning summer season is now upon us, Macheso has vowed to continue working with Ndebele.
“As long as we are still alive and kicking, more joint shows will happen this year. I am glad we have created a good combination.”
