Somvubu fall to Dzivarasekwa

SOMVUBU Secondary School fell 3-1 on penalties to Dzivarasekwa 2 in the final of the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) Under-20 girls’ soccer national tournament held at Mutare Boys High on Friday.

After regulation time, the two sides were deadlocked at 0-0.
It took the penalty lottery to settle matters.

On their way to the final, Somvubu knocked out Mpopoma High School in the quarter-finals with a 5-3 victory through a penalty shoot out.

They had played to a 1-1 draw in stipulated time.
Somvubu went on to beat St Francis 1-0 in the semi-finals to book a place in the final.

Enroute to the final, Dzivarasekwa had beaten Chegato 2-0 in the quarter-finals before getting a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Nyamauro in the semi-finals.

Mpopoma High School player Sitambo Sibanda finished as the tournament’s top goalscorer with five goals. Tanyaradzwa Chihoro from Dzivarasekwa 2 was named player of the tournament with Judith Mudzengere from the same school named the best goalkeeper.

Somvubu is a secondary school located in Bubi district which is in Matabeleland North Province in Zimbabwe. It is one of the best secondary schools in Bubi district in sport and it is where Azam FC of Tanzania’s hitman Prince Dube was discovered.

Their success comes as no surprise after the school partnered with Bulawayo based football side Lobengula City Queens in an expansion drive which sees the school feed players into the City side. Lobengula City Queens play their football in the Zifa Women’s Southern Region Division One league where they took part in last season and finished in position six.

At that time, through the Majinkila Hope foundation and KiTAid, a kit was donated to the Somvubu girls’ soccer team.
The donation also included playing balls. They seem to have put the donation to good use.

Other clubs so far that benefited from the benevolence of Majinkila Hope Foundation and KiTAid are Lobengula City Queens, Street Set, eFusini FC, Real Stars Academy, Entumbane, Tigers FC, Pumula, Lobengula Rovers, Mthala FC, Kalika FC, Nkwabene high school in Insiza District in Matabeleland South and LSDA Academy.

Somvubu atoned for the region’s poor showing at the NASH Track and Field Championships held in Marondera earlier this year where Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South occupied the last three positions.
