A 71-YEAR-OLD woman had to flee for her life after her 35-year-old son tried to strike her with an axe for inquiring about her missing water melon which he had stolen.Future Moyo, who is from Masendu area, also threw large stones at his mother, Thembeni Moyo, who scurried out of her homestead and sought refuge at a neighbour’s homestead.

Future appeared before Plumtree magistrate Mr Gideon Ruvetsa facing charges of making murder threats.

He was remanded in custody to 28 May after Mr Ruvetsa ordered him to be examined by two medical doctors to ascertain his mental stability.

Future, who denied having attacked his mother, told the court that his mother was trying to get rid                                 of him.

“I did not attack my mother, she just wants to get rid of me. She hates me and that is why she is fabricating all these lies just to make sure that I suffer. She has caused a lot of suffering for us as family.

“She has managed to get our neighbours and my father to take her side and they are teaming up against me. I had gone to visit her at her homestead and she chased me away but I did not mention anything about killing her,” he said.

Prosecuting, Mr Elisha Mazorodze said Moyo tormented his mother on 8 May.

He said Future arrived at his mother’s homestead and sat in the kitchen hut without her noticing.

“On 8 May around 10am Future arrived at his mother’s homestead and sat in the kitchen. The complainant found him and asked why he had stolen her water melon from the fields.

“Future started insulting Moyo and accused her of being a witch and killing her brother. A misunderstanding arose between them and Future threatened to kill the complainant,” said Mr Mazorodze.

He said Moyo ordered her son to leave but he proceeded to her bedroom hut and retrieved an axe and revealed that he would use it to kill her in a bid to end her witchcraft.

He said Future tried to strike his mother with the axe but he missed her as she rushed out of the kitchen hut.

Future pursued her until she ran out of the homestead and then threw the axe at the complainant with an intention to strike her but missed.

Mr Mazorodze said Future started throwing stones at his mother as she ran away towards their neighbour’s homestead and her husband came to her rescue.

He said Future fled from the homestead but was later arrested after his mother reported the matter to the police.
