IN a shocking breach of African tradition, a Chinhoyi man has been jailed for attacking his mother-in-law during a heated family dispute.
Gift Katongomara (25) stormed his ex-wife’s home at Hunyani Farm on August 17, demanding to see her. An argument broke out, and when the mother-in-law stepped in to calm the situation, he turned violent.
Witnesses were stunned as Katongomara hurled vulgar insults before picking up a stone and striking her on the head.
He was hauled before the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court and sentenced to 18 months in jail, with part of the sentence suspended on condition of good behaviour and community service.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) condemned the attack, urging families to use mediation to resolve disputes peacefully.
Assaulting a mother-in-law is considered deeply taboo in African culture, where elders are to be respected and protected, not harmed.
