A KINGSDALE family squabble turned into a shocking courtroom tale after a 26-year-old man chose fists over the volume button when his mother asked for some peace and quiet.
Nkosilathi Milton Mpofu allegedly attacked his mother, Leah Mpala (44), over a late-night radio dispute.
The incident, which sounds like something straight out of a neighbourhood nightmare, happened on April 10 around 11PM.
According to prosecutor Mehluli Ndlovu, the drama started when Mpala, like any tired parent, simply asked her son to lower the volume so she could get some sleep.
Instead of reaching for the knob, Mpofu reportedly “reached” for violence.
In a shocking twist, the court heard that he flew into a rage and left his mother’s ears ringing, with a couple of well-placed slaps.
The matter landed before Bulawayo Magistrate Barbara Phiri, who wasted no time in “tuning” Mpofu into reality.
She fined him US$150, with a six-month jail term waiting in the wings if he fails to pay. The prison sentence was suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Magistrate Phiri did not hold back, blasting Mpofu’s actions and warning that such behaviour is not just unacceptable but dangerous.
“This is wrong,” she said, “Respect your mother and never resort to violence as it has serious consequences.”
