NEW DELHI — India’s ruling Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi yesterday filled her nomination papers to contest the upcoming general elections from Rae Bareli constituency in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. “The people of Rae Bareli have accepted me with a lot of love. I am hopeful Rae Bareli will elect me again,” Gandhi told the media, after filing her nomination in the district administration office where she was accompanied by her son and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.

Gandhi has won from Rae Bareli in 2004 and 2009 by a huge margin and is seeking re-election for the third consecutive five-year term as a Member of Parliament.

India goes to the polls on April 7 and Rae Bareli, a traditional seat of the Gandhis, will vote on April 30. — Xinhua.
