POLICE have warned people to remain on high alert as criminals, masquerading as financial agencies, are intent on duping them with false investment promises.
The warning comes following the arrest of suspected fraudster Thabani Siwela, 24, of Paradise Park, in Marondera.
In a statement, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) acting spokesperson, Detective Assistant-Inspector, Rachael Muteweri, said people should exercise due diligence in all their dealings, as scammers were on the loose.
Det Ass Insp Muteweri said the CID Commercial Crimes Division arrested Siwela for three counts of fraud.
She said between 2019 and 2020, Siwela masqueraded as the owner of FX Primus Investment Company, and duped three elderly women.
“The suspect purportedly held workshops on foreign currency investments at a local hotel and made the victims believe that there were huge returns on investment, as they would earn interest monthly.
“After the guaranteed time, the complainants made follow-ups with the accused person, but he became evasive and the complainants later learnt that they had been duped of US$4 750,” said Det Ass Insp Muteweri.
She said Siwela went into hiding and was arrested on August 3, in Marondera, following a tip-off from residents.
Siwela appeared in court on August 5 and was remanded in custody until tomorrow.
“There is a likelihood that the accused person could have duped many other people, using the same modus operandi,” said Det Ass Insp Muteweri.
