Sorry Denver, we failed you

Sir

Dear Denver.

If I knew where you stayed I would have put your home address but they say you are of no fixed abode anymore.

You must be one of the free spirits that XQ and Killer T sing about in that smash track – doing as you please, disappearing and appearing.

When you burst onto the scene in 2011 as part of the youthful Dynamos side that Lloyd Mutasa had put together the nation, including Bosso and Makepekepe fans, fell in love with you.

I did too!

Denver, you looked sweet and innocent but proved to be very dangerous with the ball at your feet.

Boy you left defenders for dead with a simple body swerve, just like Tauya “The Flying Doctor” Murehwa before you.

At times you were so good that just comparing you to Murehwa without including the great Peter Ndlovu in that conversation was an insult.

And when you won the Soccer Star of the Year in 2012, no one had any qualms. Same as when you left for Mzansi after being signed by Wits.

We all said it, that Mundikumbuke deserved it all.

I don’t know why VaShagare and his DeMbare DotComs crew gave you that nickname but my guess is it was because of the way you made people remember with skills that were so divine.

We all hoped that you would set the Absa Premiership on fire but you never did with reports that you developed more interest in the fairer sex than that round ball.

The money you used to send your grandmother for groceries became less and less before it stopped coming.

Maybe it got lost on its way or you decided against supporting the old woman who sacrificed so much for you.

In yours truly’s mind, the latter seems the more feasible explanation, you forgot about your gogo my boy and her tears watered your misery.

After being loaned from one club to another, you finally returned home last year and you had nothing to show for your time in the Super Diski.

Even your sneakers looked fake and I wouldn’t know about the underwear you wore.

That one is for that serial bed-hopping DeMbare fan to testify since she is the one you dated upon your arrival.

The day I saw you with that no angel of a woman I knew that your talk of wanting to play your way back into form was just that – talk.

However, with the benefit of hindsight, I also feel like I let you down Denver.

Sir should have warned you, the people who see you frequenting that drug haven should have warned you and our football system should have protected you better.

Dude we made you Warriors captain when you were just 21!

What message were we sending to that small head of yours?

Weren’t we confirming you as a genius?

Maybe we forgot that you were just a boy who moved from Kiglon to Dynamos and found some fame.

Your head needed to mature first.

We failed you then but now you are failing yourself son.

Lloyd Mutasa has tried his best to give you a crack at resurrecting your career but you are peeing in his face.

Father appears to have given up on you, your manager Gibson Mahachi also looks fed up and even that dreadlocked journalist we believe to be VaShagare is no longer singing your high praises.

At Ascot in midweek I read that “you struggled with the stuff that you used to do with your eyes closed” and my heart bled.

Is this how bad it has become? What are you taking Denver? Bronco? A mixture of bronco and palm leaves?

Hopefully this is not the beginning of the end for you because apart from football there is little else you are good at.

Even the women you bed say you are not that prolific between the sheets, maybe the situation worsened due to your alleged drug abuse.

We hear your soldier can no longer stand at attention.

You are slowly taking the look of a tout and your football career is in the woods Denver.

Only you can save yourself from this mess!

Sir exits the scene
