SOS reveals plan for Bulawayo high school

SOS Children’s Villages, an international child welfare organisation, has announced plans to establish a modern high school in Bulawayo’s North End suburb to meet the growing educational needs of the community.

The organisation is calling on individuals, businesses, and organisations to partner in this ambitious project, which aims to provide quality and affordable education while maintaining the high standards associated with its existing primary school, Hermann Gmeiner Primary School (HGPS).

Founded in 1949, SOS Children’s Villages operates in 136 countries, focusing on building families for children in need and advocating for child rights.

SOS Children’s Villages Zimbabwe national director, Mr Addmore Makunura, said the decision to establish a high school was largely influenced by parents and guardians of HGPS learners, who want their children to continue learning in an institution that upholds the same values.

“Parents of learners at HGPS Bulawayo have expressed a strong desire for a nearby high school that upholds the same high standards of education. They want their children to continue their learning journey in an environment that maintains excellence and quality,” he said.

Mr Makunura said establishing such a school would ensure a seamless transition for learners.
The high school will be constructed on a 20-hectare site that currently houses an old clubhouse, peripheral buildings, and sports fields. Once complete, it will feature modern classrooms, sports facilities, and boarding houses.

“We are seeking partners to support the development of SOS Children’s Villages High School in Bulawayo by providing resources, expertise, and materials for infrastructure. Our commitment is to provide quality, affordable education not only to orphans and vulnerable children but to all the children within our catchment areas,” said Mr Makunura.

With an envisioned capacity of 1 000 learners from Form 1 to Upper 6, the school will offer a broad curriculum, including technical and vocational courses to equip learners with practical and entrepreneurial skills.

“SOS Children’s Villages in Zimbabwe is committed to providing quality, affordable education not only to orphans and vulnerable children but to all the children within our catchment areas,” said Mr Makunura.

The project is expected to be completed by 2026, and SOS Children’s Villages has no strict requirements for potential partners and all interested parties will be considered based on their ability to contribute effectively.

Mr Makunura said this initiative aligns with SOS Children’s Villages’ broader mission of advocating for children’s rights and ensuring they have access to quality learning environments.
