BULAWAYO is set to come alive with rich and uplifting choral harmonies as Sound of Joy Chorale prepares to host a vibrant musical showcase on May 16, 2026. Held under the theme Songs of the Soil: Africa’s Sacred Story, the event promises a captivating afternoon where music, culture and storytelling will come together in celebration of African heritage. It is expected to be more than just a concert, offering audiences a deeply rooted cultural experience that speaks to identity and history through song.

The showcase is expected to attract choral music lovers from across the city, bringing together different generations who share a passion for vocal harmony and live performance.

In an interview, choir conductor Thando Sibanda said the production was inspired by a strong desire to promote African music while also shining a light on local composers whose work often goes unrecognised.

“As Sound of Joy, we felt African music isn’t celebrated enough in our country, so we deliberately selected works by local composers such as Mr PD Bajilla and Thobeka Msipha,” he said.

Sibanda added that the choir is carefully balancing the richness of tradition with the need to remain relevant to modern audiences.

“We strive to remain authentic while staying relevant, and that involves continuous research into the music we perform,” he said.

Beyond providing entertainment, the showcase also carries a strong educational focus, particularly for young people, who may be unfamiliar with the stories behind the music.

“We hope the youth will gain a deeper appreciation of African history, as some of our pieces highlight figures such as King Mzilikazi and Joshua Nkomo, among others,” he said.

Formed in 2019, Sound of Joy Chorale specialises in choral and operatic music and has steadily grown into a respected name within the local arts scene. Over the years, the group has taken part in a number of notable projects, including a collaboration with the German Embassy during the 2023 unveiling of the Buddy Bear, as well as hosting several successful concerts.

The chorale has also distinguished itself in competitions, with achievements such as winning the Econet iJoy Afta Joy Challenge last year and securing third place at the 2024 Tiro Mpane National Choral Eisteddfod.
