BOWLING teams from South Africa and Namibia are in Bulawayo for the International Quadrangular and Seniors’ series that starts this morning at Hillside Bowling Club.
The tournament ends on Sunday.
Matabeleland Bowling Association (MBA) secretary Boni van Heerden said the South African and Namibian teams held their practice sessions yesterday at the venue.
“We’ve three teams from South Africa and two from Namibia, so this will be a big event for us. We expect a good and competitive weekend of bowls and our team is ready as they’ve been training hard,” said van Heerden.
The tournament will have 10 men’s and 10 women’s teams competing in singles, pairs, threes and fours in both categories.
Van Heerden said the tournament was an open event and dismissed the notion that bowling is a sport for old, retired people.
She said they would also use the tournament to market bowling so that younger players can take up the sport.
The Zimbabwe men’s team would be banking on Terry Bowes’ experience while the women will look up to Jane Rigby, who is ranked ninth in the world.
Zimbabwe women’s team: Kerry Craven, Jane Rigby, Mel James, Ally Dale and Debbie Robertson.
Men: Denis Streak, Tom Craven, Clive Robertson, Jono Evans and Terry Bowes.
