TWO white South Africans and two Mutare men were on Monday hauled before the courts on allegations of illegally possessing five pieces of diamonds which they intended to smuggle out of the country.
Posthuman Mark (47), Johannes Hendik Nel (40), Tarisai Mangwende (38) and Manedziwa Robinson (25) appeared before Mutare magistrate Mrs Sekai Chiundura for contravening Section 3(1) of the Precious Stones Trade Act Chapter 21;06.
They were denied bail and will be back in court on January 13.
Public prosecutor Mr Brian Goto told the court that they were arrested at Nyanyadzi roadblock following a tip-off.
“The four accused persons were arrested at the Nyanyadzi roadblock after a tip-off was made to Sergeant Phiri stationed at Nyanyadzi that passengers who were in a Mitsubishi vehicle with registration numbers CJ34CS GP were buying diamonds at Hot Springs. Sergeant Phiri teamed up with other four policemen. When the vehicle approached the roadblock it was searched and five pieces of diamonds were recovered underneath the driver’s seat. Police also recovered a Tanita model 1210 scale, DT-1000 digital scale and a testing kit in a satchel of one of the accused persons.”
