SOUTHERN region basketball champions, Southern Mavericks are determined to defend the league title and have started preparations for the coming season by playing friendly matches.
So far, they have played four matches and won them all.
The new season is proposed to start after October 7 after the pre-season is done.
The final date will however be confirmed after the Bulawayo Basketball Association AGM meeting which is scheduled for September 10.
Speaking to Chronicle Sport, Southern Mavericks basketball team coach, Kudzai Mugezi said they are looking forward to the upcoming season and there is no time to rest for them as they are involved in basketball throughout the year.
“We are slowly getting ourselves ready for the upcoming season, it’s hard taking a break.
We saw our level of competition and we are going to raise the bar this coming season,” said Mugezi.
According to the coach, the team is not only eyeing to defend the local league title, but also wants a top-two finish in the national league as they also dream of being a basketball powerhouse in the country.
The team finished fourth in the previous edition of the national basketball league.
“Our goal for this coming season is to retain the title of being the best club in Bulawayo and also contend for a top second finish in the national league, we finished the 2022 national league ranked fourth we want to get ourselves in a position to win the title of being the best team national,” he said.
