Rocks put up disciplined performances, which saw them winning all their matches. Rocks showed their intention of winning the tournament when they beat Mountaineers by 84 runs in their first game before dismissing the battling Mashonaland Eagles by 34 runs.
In their third match Rocks dismissed Tuskers by 51 runs. In Thursday’s match Southern Rocks won the toss and elected to bat. Rocks posted 159 runs before restricted Rhinos to 144 runs and eventually won by 15 runs in a tightly-contested tie. Ruvarashe Chinyemba, who posted 57 runs, was delighted with the victory and praised the team for a job well done.
“It was a good tournament and everyone wanted to win, we prepared ourselves well for the whole tournament.
“We were very disciplined with the bat and our bowlers took some important wickets which kept us in the game. There was also a lot of confidence in our team which helped us a lot.” The tournament, which was used to select the players that will represent the country at the ICC Women World Cup qualifiers in November, started on Monday under the watchful eye of national team coach Alistar Zowe.
“The girls played well overally but I think the bowlers dominated more than the batsmen. The level of competition was good, the coming in of new faces like Loren Tshuma from Tuskers shows that the talent is there but they need guidance whilst they are young,” said Zowe.
Southern Rocks’ triumph was also praised by the Woman’s co-ordinator for ZC Caroline Nyamande.
Nyamande said names of those who made it to the national team would be released on Monday.
