The violent gangs that have invaded popular markets such as Mupedzanhamo, often charging exorbitant fees to vendors, are to be specially targeted to bring back law and order while all four urban authorities in Harare Metropolitan are being encouraged to create and expand proper controlled markets for vendors and small and medium enterprises.

This week, gangs clashed in Mbare for control of Mupedzanhamo Market which has been closed for some time now. Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Mr Tafadzwa Muguti said plans were underway to bring back the law to Harare.

“The office of the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution has since engaged the City of Harare in the reopening of their Mupedzanhamo Market, the construction of a state-of-the-art SME Complex at Shawasha Grounds and the immediate reconstruction of a modern Glen View Furniture Industrial Park which was recently burnt down for the 11th time,” he said.

“Furthermore, we have encouraged the City of Harare, Chitungwiza Municipality, Ruwa Local Board and Epworth Local Board to urgently consider public-private-partnerships for the construction of more work spaces, markets and business centres in every ward for our vendors and small medium enterprises in the province.

“It is important to note that Harare Metropolitan Province has a zero tolerance policy on corruption and lawlessness.”

Mr Muguti said the Tuesday clashes were a result of increased indiscipline and lawlessness “among the thugs”.
