SPAR’s Fun Run held recently at Old Georgians Sports Club was a phenomenal success.
Participants from all age groups came to support Childline and Shungu Dzevana Orphanage.
Spar’s Fun Run has been running for over 10 years in support of Childline and this relationship has assisted Childline to continue the amazing work that they do on a daily basis.
Childline Zimbabwe operates a free Child Helpline — 116 – that children of all ages have access to anywhere in the country.
They work tirelessly to be the voice of the voiceless; amplifying their voices while ensuring their safety and well-being.
Psycho-social support through counselling is provided via 116 and drop-in centres in the 10 provinces of Zimbabwe that support the Child Helpline.
This year, SPAR decided to extend a helping hand to Shungu Dzevana Trust.
This is a private voluntary organisation situated in Hatfield founded by Reverend Sister Mercy Mutyambizi in 1992.
Shungu Dzevana is a Shona phrase that means “passionate concern for children”. Shungu Dzevana Trust is not just reliant on donations, but they have two income- generating projects -a market gardening project and rearing of layer chickens.
Minster of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Prisca Mupfumira, who was the guest of honour, also took part in the 5km walk in support of the two charities.
“Our ministry is working closely with charitable organisations in addressing different social ills that are affecting Zimbabweans at large and being associated with such a worthy cause is indeed an honour,” said Minister Mupfumira during the handover ceremony of proceeds from the event.
“I proudly recognise the work that Spar is doing in different communities and this Fun Run clearly shows how dedicated they are in fulfilling their corporate social responsibility. Thank you SPAR for organising this Fun Run and for all the work you do through your Community Benefits Scheme.”
Spar Zimbabwe marketing manager Emma Ruzvidzo said the event went well.
“We took a risk this year by moving Fun Run from the traditional Sunday to Saturday, but it paid off as the support was overwhelming. We thank all our sponsors and service providers without whom the event would not have been successful and all participants who came out in their numbers to run for a worthy cause. Not forgetting the DJs who kept the crowds entertained,” said Ruzvidzo.
A total of $9 000 was raised on the day and Childline were the recipients with Shungu Dzevana receiving a donation of clothes, mealie-meal, Crystal candy sweets and Colcom Cambridge sausages.
