THE Zimbabwe National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ZNSPCA) has warned the public against owning, breeding and cross-breeding dangerous dog breeds, saying these animals require specialised handling, socialisation and containment responsibilities because, if neglected, they can result in tragic consequences.
This comes after a Bluff Hill man’s pit bulls mauled a neighbour to death.
The ZNSPCA confiscated the dogs and has since put them down humanely.
Mike Mupinga was arrested over the death of Mr Samuel Machera (39).
The tragedy occurred around midnight on Saturday when Mr Machera had gone out for a smoke.
In a statement, ZNSPCA said, “It is with profound sadness and deep regret that the Zimbabwe National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals confirms the tragic death of Mr Samuel Machera, aged 39, following a fatal dog attack at a private residence.
“The attack involved a cross-breed pit bull dog owned by Mr Mike Mupinga, aged 40. Mr. Machera succumbed to the severe injuries sustained during the incident.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Machera’s family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time. In the aftermath of this tragedy, ZNSPCA acted swiftly and has since removed all dogs from the property in question. The animals were humanely euthanised, in accordance with animal welfare protocols and in the interest of public safety. Initial assessments indicate clear evidence of neglect, confinement, and poor socialisation of the animals involved. Such conditions are known to severely affect canine behaviour and are especially dangerous when present in certain breeds, particularly those already classified as high-risk or dangerous.
“We strongly caution the public against the ownership, breeding, and cross-breeding of dangerous dog breeds. These animals require specialised handling, socialisation, and containment responsibilities that, if neglected, can result in tragic consequences such as these.”
ZNSPCA said it remained firmly committed to promoting responsible pet ownership, upholding animal welfare standards and supporting the legal prosecution of individuals found guilty of cruelty or neglect.s
