SPEAKER of Parliament Advocate Jacob Mudenda is in Rome to participate in the 2nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Interfaith Dialogue.

During his visit to the Italian capital, Adv Mudenda is also expected to hold a meeting with the newly installed global leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, tomorrow.

The high-profile conference, running from June 19 to 21, brings together global parliamentary leaders, faith representatives and civil society under the theme “Strengthening trust and embracing hope for our common future”.

Organised by the IPU, the Italian Parliament and Religions for Peace, the summit builds on the 2023 Marrakech Declaration, which emphasised interfaith dialogue as a tool for peaceful coexistence, human rights and social cohesion.

In a statement yesterday, the Parliament of Zimbabwe said Advocate Mudenda is accompanied by legislators from the Senate and the National Assembly.

“The Rome Conference is unique as it brings together Speakers of Parliaments, Members of Parliament as well as representatives of religions, beliefs, governments, relevant United Nations (UN) bodies, international organisations, faith-based and civil society organisations and academia.

“Speaker Mudenda’s delegation includes Senator Chief Nechombo, Hon Farai Jere (chairperson, Thematic Committee on Culture and Heritage), Hon Maureen Kademaunga (IPU Forum for Young Parliamentarians).”

During the visit, Advocate Mudenda is expected to showcase Zimbabwe’s constitutional commitment to religious freedom, highlighting policies that promote interfaith harmony.
