Specialist rescue workers have been called to carry out a safety mission near Zebra Hiltrop lodge along the Beitbridge to Bulawayo highway where a commercial tanker carrying LPG gas has had an accident.

The accident occurred early on Wednesday morning and the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), the police and other special gas technicians are on the ground to transfer the gas into another tanker.

The police officer commanding Beitbridge district Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube confirmed the incident.

He said they suspect the accident could have been caused by fatigue on the part of the driver who has since been taken to Beitbridge hospital for medical care.

Chief Supt Ncube advised motorists to approach the area with caution and to cooperate with the team carrying out the rescue mission on the ground.

“The driver has been taken to the hospital and our team supported by officials from EMA and related agencies are on the ground to ensure the safe rescue mission,” he said.

“Further investigations into the matter are still in progress”.
