Speed freaks invited to drag race meet

Her organisation has organised a drag race meeting.

The sport has been growing in popularity in the city with good crowds witnessed.

“We’re saying to people, take racing off the streets and bring it to the track,” said Young.
The weekend’s event will be for cars and motor cycles.

The drag event will be the fourth of the year and Young said Saturday promised a lot of thrills.
Drivers and bikers are expected from Bulawayo and Harare.

Harare driver Kevin Allmark, who drives a Subaru, is one of the country’s top drag racing drivers.

Bulawayo-based Darren Pragji, who competed recently in Harare and came a stunning second overall, and track favourites, Jimmy Zevgolis and Kirk Allberry in a VW Golf 1600 and a Cobra respectively are set to dominate the afternoon’s proceedings.

Other popular track names like Ian Gutherless, Dave Marsberg and Fuzzy Walker will be featuring in the motor cycle sprints, according to Young.

However, by their nature, the drag races also feature novice drivers as the event is open to anyone who wishes to race.

“All drivers have to do is turn up in a car, produce a valid driver’s licence and pay an insurance fee.

“The public can expect some highly-competitive racing on the day, the big drawcard being that drag racing is fast-paced and exciting with a clear view of both the start and the finish line.

“And the fact that it’s open to everyone — unlike main circuit racing which is much more stringent —  means it’s anyone’s race and a good starting point for those toying with the idea of taking up motor sport in a serious way,” she said.

In drag racing, popular in the field of motor sport around the world, cars race two at a time, on a straight  400m stretch, and the winner is chosen by a process of elimination.

Racing on Saturday is from 12 noon onwards, with a $5 entry fee at the gate, children under 12 go in for free. Although there will be full bar and catering available, cooler boxes will be permitted, subject to a cover charge.

The weekend event is the forerunner to the National Main Circuit Race which will take place in Bulawayo on 15 September.

“This will be the second of the national legs to be held in Bulawayo and, as the season culminates, it promises to be an action-packed day of racing not to be missed.”
