Motorists caught speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or otherwise violating traffic regulations will face the full wrath of the law, with offenders who are convicted risking jail time, police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi has said.
He said this yesterday as police stepped up operations ahead of Heroes Day today and Defence Forces Day tomorrow, with increased deployments and road safety measures in place countrywide along all the major highways.
Comm Nyathi said motorists should expect breathalyser tests and speed traps on major roads as police intensify efforts to curb road traffic accidents during the holiday period.
“It is the responsibility of all drivers to ensure that they are there to be counted through those regulations,” he said.
Police deployed breathalysers and speed traps on major roads, warning motorists against disregarding stipulated speed limits.
“We are also saying for those who will be found to be speeding in such a way that they drive above the stipulated speed limit for particular sections of the road, then they risk being arrested because the speed traps are certainly on and fully operational,” he said.
Comm Nyathi said those arrested would be dealt with in accordance with the law, with cases warranting prosecution being taken to court.
“Remember, the laws of the country are very clear on anyone who violates the country’s rules and regulations,” he said.
“The police is there to ensure that the law takes its course without fear or favour and, where appropriate, those who should go to court will certainly go to court.”
Those convicted of offences that carry custodial sentences could consequently find themselves behind bars, depending on the circumstances of each case and the sentence imposed by the courts.
The heightened police presence comes as the country prepares for the Heroes Day and Defence Forces Day holidays, which are expected to see increased traffic volumes and public gatherings.
Comm Nyathi said adequate deployments had already been made to ensure public safety and security during the commemorations and other activities.
“The police have already made adequate deployments in terms of the various activities taking place at national, provincial and city level, and also other gatherings,” he said.
“So certainly the police is on full alert, and the public is guaranteed of their safety and security.”
Police have urged motorists to observe speed limits, avoid driving after consuming alcohol and comply with all traffic regulations to ensure a safe holiday period.
