THE Government has reaffirmed its commitment to using sport as a vehicle for youth empowerment, social cohesion and economic development, with Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and
Devolution Albert Nguluvhe saying football plays a critical role in building disciplined and productive communities.
Speaking as Guest of Honour at the Dulivhadzimu United FC 2026 Annual General Meeting held at Canvas Corner in Beitbridge on Saturday, Minister Nguluvhe said the club’s role extends beyond competition, as it provides young people with opportunities to develop their talents and pursue their aspirations.
“Dulivhadzimu United FC is much more than a football club. It is a source of hope, unity and pride for the people of Beitbridge. It provides young people with opportunities to develop their talents, build discipline and pursue their dreams,” he said.
The Minister said Government recognises sport as a powerful tool for youth development, community building and nation building.
“Football teaches discipline, teamwork, resilience, respect and leadership. These are the same values that build successful communities and productive citizens.
“Today’s community footballers are tomorrow’s Warriors, Mighty Warriors and national heroes. It is therefore our collective responsibility to invest in their future,” he said.
The AGM was held under the theme “Together We Build; Together We Rise” and brought together Zifa and Central Region Soccer League representatives, traditional leaders, sponsors, players, coaches and supporters.
Minister Nguluvhe challenged the club to take a leading role in fighting drug and substance abuse among young people, saying sport provides a positive platform for youth engagement.
“Sport remains one of the most effective tools in preventing drug and substance abuse. When young people are actively involved in football, they develop discipline, confidence, purpose and positive friendships that keep them away from harmful influences,” he said.
He urged the club to promote the message: “Choose Sport. Choose Life. Say No to Drugs.”
The Minister pledged to pay gate fees for 50 vulnerable supporters during every home match until the end of the 2026 season and said he would mobilise further support for the club as it seeks to establish itself and eventually gain promotion into the Premier Soccer League.
He also urged the newly elected executive to uphold principles of service, accountability and integrity.
“Leadership is not about positions or titles; it is about service. To those elected today, lead with humility and commitment. Build strong partnerships and always keep the welfare of players and supporters at heart,” he said.
Outgoing chairman Christian Magwali, in remarks delivered by his deputy Rex Mphisa before the elections, said the club had endured a challenging 2025 season but managed to finish in the top eight of the Central Region Soccer League.
Magwali said the team had a slow start due to poor pre-season preparations before improving following the appointment of experienced coach Rutherford Matondo.
He, however, said the team’s progress was affected by a mid-season player exodus and the departure of the coach to Hardrock FC.
Despite the challenges, he said the club managed to fulfil all its fixtures and thanked supporters, sponsors and stakeholders for their backing.
He acknowledged support from the Beitbridge Municipality, SEBATA Group, Southern Aqua, Xpress Sunshine Logistics and Pachikomo Investments, among others.
Incoming chairman Chris Kaurimbo said the new executive’s immediate focus would be to maintain the club’s position in the league while strengthening its structures.
“Some of our strategic goals include securing new sponsorship and expanding grassroots youth development,” he said.
Beitbridge Mayor Councillor Pirato Mafuta said the local authority would continue supporting Dulivhadzimu United FC as one of the town’s flagship sporting institutions.
