THE Sports and Recreation Commission, in consultation with the Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation has suspended all sporting activity in the country.

A statement from the SRC said all sporting activity in Zimbabwe has been put on hold until 31 January after the announcement of  new lockdown measures by Vice President Constantine Chiwenga who is also the Minister of Health and Child Care. The SRC further stated that any exceptions will be dealt with on a case by case basis.

“In light of the additional lockdown measures announced this 2nd January 2021 by the Vice President of the Republic of Zimbabwe – Hon (Rtd) General Dr C. G. D. N. Chiwenga, who is also responsible for the Ministry of Health and Child Care, the Sports and Recreation Commission in consultation with the Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, Hon. Dr K. L.

Coventry, has with immediate effect suspended ALL sporting activity in Zimbabwe, subject to review on the 31st of January, 2021. Any exceptions will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis subject to the receipt of a new application from the sports discipline concerned. Violations of this directive will be prosecuted,’’ read the statement from the SRC.

The national men’s football team is in camp preparing for the African Nations Champions in Cameroon later on this month and the suspension of sporting activity should not affect the Warriors preparations. Another national team, the men’s cricket side is gearing up to face Afghanistan next month and their fine tuning for that tour should not be affected.
