HARARE Sports Club believe they have returned from their tour of Zambia a better side that is poised to mount a strong challenge for honours in the National Rugby League. Sports Club were in Lusaka for the annual David Abel Ray Phiri International Rugby Challenge at the Lusaka Showgrounds where clubs from four countries took part.
The former champions’ stand-in coach, Tafadzwa Mhende, said yesterday that their Zambian tour was a major boost to his players’ confidence and fitness levels.
Sportivo played five games during the tour and managed three wins.
“It was a good thing for us to do, using our bye sensibly. We had a good opportunity to use the tournament as our preparation for our next match in the National Rugby League.
“After losing to Old Georgians we needed to train hard and work on our mistakes and I am happy the team gained their fitness and had a chance to improve.
“I am impressed and I believe we will do well in the league this weekend.
“The tour was good, we managed to play five games and we won three of them.
“The first game we won 29-10 which was followed up by a 26-5 win.
“Then we suffered defeat to Nkwazi who beat us 12-7 in the group stages,” said Mhende.
The Zimbabwe giants proceeded to the semi-final where they met Diggers and lost 12-7.
Sports Club had been hoping to emulate the feat of bitter domestic rivals Old Hararians who won the title at the invitational tournament last year.
