THE two-day annual Celebrate the Children Sports and Arts Festival roared into life yesterday at the Harare Polytechnic.
Festival director Maimba Mapuranga said their focus was on bringing the power of sport to disadvantaged and marginalised children. “We host this festival to incorporate children that reside in children’s homes, to unite them and give them a chance to showcase their abilities because we believe that sport allows children to interact in a social context and work as a team.

“With this festival, we use sport as a vehicle for social inclusion and personal development to increase opportunities for children from underprivileged backgrounds,” he said.

Participating homes in this year’s festival include Mashonaland East’s Ivordale, Children’s Home of Chiredzi, Harare Children’s Home, Chinyaradzo, Hupenyu, SOS Bindura, and Mutoko’s Mother of Peace children’s homes .

Some of the sponsors who backed the festival include MultiChoice Zimbabwe, National Foods, Green Fuel, Unilever, Olivine and Koala Abattoir.
