ZIMBABWE’S Brendon de Jonge was in an eight-way tie for second after the opening round of the Barclays Championships at Ridgewood Country Club at Paramus in New Jersey in the United States on Thursday.De Jonge is yet to claim a PGA Tour title and his five-under-par opening round gives the local star hope that this could be his breakthrough tourney.
The 33-year-old had an outstanding round that saw him trail leader Bo Van Pelt of United States by a single shot going into yesterday second round.
De Jonge, who missed the cut last week, was tied with Americans Cameron Tringale, Hunter Maham, Charles Howell, Ben Martin, Brendon Todd, Jim Furky and Irishman Paul Casey. De Jonge opened the first round with fours pars with an eagle coming on hole number five.
The second nine saw a fired-up De Jonge opening with two birdies, a par and a birdie. Sitting on four-under going into the 14th hole the in-form Zimbabwean dropped a shot with a bogey but quickly made up for that with a birdie.
He picked his sixth birdie of the day on the 17th and closed with a par for a 66.
The golfer has two top ten finishes on the US PGA Tour this year.
