Sports Commission director-general Charles Nhemachema yesterday said they are yet to decide on the city to host the Games as they are waiting for Cabinet approval.
“At the moment there has not been any decision reached as to which city will host the Games because the matter is now awaiting Cabinet approval.
“The papers are with the office of the Principal director (Paul Damasane) and they are preparing a document which will go to Cabinet for approval.
“Once Cabinet approves which city will host the Games, we will then start to put in place the Local Organising Committee,” said Nhemachena yesterday.
Nhemachena said the composition of the 2014 Zone Six Youth Games Local Organising Committee will have a bias towards the hosting city.
“In terms of the composition of the LOC, I think the majority of the people should be from the hosting city so that it will be easy in terms of logistics,” said Nhemachena.
But according to sources, the Games are likely to be staged in Harare following the recommendations from the Zone Six secretariat in Botswana.
“A team from the Zone Six recently came to Zimbabwe and inspected facilities in both Harare and Bulawayo.
“While it’s the prerogative of the hosting nation to choose the town to host the Games, the guys at the Zone Six offices appear to be recommending Harare,” said the sources.
While the Sports Commission still wait to confirm the host city of the Zone Six Games in 2014, Nhemachena said they will soon be filling up key posts in the secretariat.
“As we wait for the decision from Cabinet, we are trying to cover some ground by recruiting the chief executive officer, the director –administration, director –technical and director –finance.
“We are going to place advertisements in the newspapers and hope to fill these posts soon so that these guys will be able to start working out.
“Already we have lost some time and when a LOC is appointed they will find some work already covered by the secretariat,” said Nhenamachena.
The Zone Six Games are set to be the biggest multi sports event to be hosted by Zimbabwe since the All Africa Games in 1995.
Last year Zambia hosted the Games in Lusaka with Zimbabwe sending a depleted squad.
