THREE sports courses will be conducted in Binga and Hwange before the end of the year. The courses are part of the district’s skills empowerment drive, according to the organisers. The first course will be a netball Level Two coaching and umpiring course which will be held in Hwange, followed by a Level One athletics course set for Binga with a basketball referees seminar winding up the year’s activities in December.
According to the Hwange District physical education resource person, Enock Ngwenya, who is also the Matabeleland North Athletics Board secretary-general, the netball course will be held at Lwendulu Grounds starting today and ending on Saturday.
“Joyce Maboke and Vinah Maseko, technical heads of Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South respectively will conduct the course. Our targets are former and current players who hold Level One.
Most coaches and umpires are holders of Level One so there is a need to upgrade them so that they are able to coach and umpire at Super League level which is the highest in the country,” said Ngwenya.
He said with two Super League teams in the district and a Division Two league, the course will come in handy for the participants.
Binga High School will play host to a Level One athletics course that will run from 5-8 November whose aim is to improve the standard of athletics in the province.
Ngwenya said the Matabeleland North Athletics Board has been conducting courses in the districts and Binga was the latest beneficiary.
“A director of coaching from the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe will run the course. Such courses have been run in Hwange, Nkayi, Lupane, Tsholotsho, Bubi, Mguza and now we move to Binga.
“There has been an improvement in grassroots athletics as evidenced by our representatives at the Cossasa Games,” said Ngwenya.
The last course of the year will be a basketball referees’ course that will be held at St Ignatius Primary School from 26 November to 1 December with primary, secondary school teachers, former players and members of the community targeted.
The course is part of the capacity building programmes set by Basketball Union of Zimbabwe which all developing provinces are required to implement.
All trained officials will get a chance to gain experience in some national and provincial competitions and games and can upgrade to another level anytime.
The course will be facilitated by Tendai Mukuruva a FIBA licensed instructor.
