ACTING Permanent Secretary for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mrs Catherine Kampila has described sport as one of the most powerful tools that can uplift women and girls.
In a speech read on her behalf by Deputy Director Coordination for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mrs Benedicta Mubaiwa, at the Provincial Women and Girls sport festival held at Stodart Grounds in Mbare today, Mrs Kampila said sport built confidence and taught discipline, teamwork and leadership.
“For a young girl, putting on a jersey and stepping onto the field can change everything. It gives her a voice. It challenges old stereotypes and opens doors she never knew existed,” she said.
Mrs Kampila said the festival was also a platform to fight the HIV/Aids scourge, raise awareness on cancer and other non-communicable diseases that affected women and girls.
“It is also part of our national effort to combat drug and substance abuse among young people,” she said.
“As you can see today, it is not just about sport but also the arts, the music, the dance. It is about the whole person.”
Mrs Kampila urged the Government, the private sector and other stakeholders to continue building strong public-private partnerships.
“Let us invest in infrastructure, revive our sporting and arts facilities because when you educate a woman, you educate a nation,” she said.
