BULAWAYO-BASED tertiary institutions relished an opportunity to prepare for their upcoming tertiary games in a Bulawayo Tertiary Sports Association (Butisa) Sports Gala that was held at United College of Education (UCE) on 13 March.

The extravaganza was graced by eight institutions in the city that comprised National University of Science and Technology (Nust), Bulawayo Polytechnic, Lupane State University, Zimbabwe School of Mines, Westgate and hosts UCE.

Athletes fought for honours in different sport codes like basketball, tennis, handball, football, netball and volleyball.

Nust came first finishing with five gold medals, two silver and three bronze in the medal table while the runners up, Bulawayo Poly walked away with four gold, five silver and three bronze medals.

The host, UCE — were third with two gold medals, one silver and two bronze.

Lupane scooped one silver and two bronze medals and Zimbabwe School of Mines got away with two silver and two bronze medals.

Bulawayo Tertiary Sports Association (Butisa) sports director and technical manager Brian Rukasha said: “The event was a great success and it also paved way for the upcoming teachers’ colleges, universities and polytechnic games which will be much of the same nature.

“The tournament was a resounding success as all the Bulawayo colleges turned up except for Hillside. The level of competition was great and winning in the different sports codes meant you are worth talking about.”

He added: “Coaches really had a good assessment platform for their teams and going forward we believe companies in Bulawayo will come on board, to partner us so that we run leagues in the different sports codes,” said Rukasha.
