CHIEF Msampakaruma, born Mr Muchaneta Chacharika, will this week host a sports gala to curb rampant poaching in his area under Kariba District.

Dubbed “The Nyaminyami Community Sports and Recreation Club 2025 Tournament (NCSRC)”, it will also address drug and substance abuse, which has become rife in the area.

Chief Msampakaruma is the founder and patron of the annual tourney.

Speaking to Zimpapers this morning, Chief Msampakaruma said the event, running from Thursday to Sunday, was being bankrolled by various organisations involved in conservancy and environmental management.

Some of the youths in the area are involved in the poaching of wild animals for game meat to buy drugs.

Kudus, buffaloes, wild pigs and even elephants are in danger from the youths’ unsanctioned hunting spree.

“We are going to host a sports and entertainment gala at Msampakaruma Business Centre, whose aim is to curb poaching and drug abuse. The campaign has been ongoing since 2016,” he said.

Zanu PF provincial youth chairman, Cde Tapiwa Masenda, who will be a guest at the event, rallied youths to shun drugs and substance abuse to better their communities.

The event will be running under the theme: “Sober Youths Enjoy Sporting Not Poaching.”
