THE sports sector handed over an assortment of goods which include clothing, sporting equipment and non perishable food items to victims of the Tokwe–Mukosi disaster to Acting Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Joseph Made, at the National Sports Stadium yesterday.

The idea of donating to the victims of the Tokwe-Mukosi disaster was mooted at a meeting between the Sports Commission and the National Sport Associations on February 22, 2014.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Sports Commission’s vice-chairperson Edward Siwela said that the sporting community was touched by the plight of the victims of the disaster hence they decided to contribute to the alleviation of the challenges.

“It was during this meeting that we agreed to assist the affected families with items such as clothing, non perishable food and sporting equipment as part of our contribution to the alleviation of the challenges brought about by the disaster,” said Siwela

In accepting the kind gesture, Made underscored the role played by sport in reducing mental stress and psychological trauma especially in tough times such as the one at Tokwe-Mukosi.

“The victims of the Tokwe–Mukosi disaster were left psychologically traumatised and mentally stressed but it is, however, heartening to note that there is sporting equipment which will assist the victims to take off their minds from the disaster.

“Sport is natural to humankind and as such we are delighted that the sporting community has decided to come forward with this modest donation which we believe will go a long way in alleviating the plight of the victims,” Made said.
