AJAX Hotspurs women’s handball side, one of the four local representatives at the Africa Club Championships slated for May 15-26 in Congo (Brazzaville) are appealing for financial assistance to make it to the competition. The club, based at Lukhanyiso Primary School in Mpopoma, Bulawayo, and formed in November last year, was selected to represent the country in Congo after excelling at the national championships held in Gweru at the beginning of the year.
Jason Ziyaphapha Moyo High School (Matabeleland South), TS Alliance (Harare) are the two men’s representatives with Danamombe from Masvingo joining Ajax Hotspurs in the women’s category.
Collen Nkomo, an official from Ajax Hotspurs, said a local company Vast Engineering has pledged to give them a playing kit and they are now appealing to well wishers who will cater for the tournament’s $800 affiliation fees, tracksuits, 10 handballs as well as transport costs.
Despite the limited resources at their disposal, Ajax Hotspurs have refused to throw in the towel on their trip to Congo.
“The girls are committed and are giving their best during our training sessions. They look sharp and raring to go even though we are not sure whether we will manage to get funds to enable us to travel to Congo Brazzaville.
“We are appealing to the community of Bulawayo and Zimbabwe as a whole to assist us raise funds so that we can realize our dream of playing at the continental stage,” Nkomo said.
As part of their preparations, Ajax Hotspurs are looking forward to playing a friendly match before leaving for the continental championships.
