THE Sports and Recreation Commission has dismissed fears that Zimbabwe will be excluded from the 2016 International Handball Federation Zone VI Challenge Trophy in South Africa.

The tournament is going to be held from September 23-28 in Johannesburg with the first three games at Wits University and the last three games at Orlando Communal Hall in Soweto.

The countries expected to participate include South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Namibia and Swaziland.

Acting Sports Commission director-general Joseph Muchechetere allayed fears Zimbabwe could be left out of the tournament.

“We are certain that the Under-20 boys and girls are going to participate in the upcoming handball tournament in Johannesburg next week. For the past week we have been in contact with the IHF concerning the tournament and finally we have been confirmed for participation,” said Muchechetere.

The Sports Commission said Allan Mandeya will coach the boys’ team while Clement Tauro will be in charge of the girls side.

Mandeya said the teams are going to undertake a two-day training camp at Queen Elizabeth School before going to South Africa on September 20.

“The teams are going to have a camp before attending the tournament.

“They should be ready by then since they are our finest players in the country,” he said.

The players were chosen at the Youth Games in Chinhoyi this year.

Meanwhile, former ZHF president, Amon Madzvamuse, has been invited to attend the tournament in his capacity as a Vice-Chairman of the Zone VI Handball Committee.

Madzvamuse confirmed to The Herald yesterday that he will be in Johannesburg for the six days of the tournament.
