SRC heeds VP Nkomo’s advice

VP Nkomo said the Government on its part will ensure the Games are held annually.

At the moment, only seven disciplines are competed for and these are athletics, soccer, goalball, wheelchair tennis and basketball, netball and five-a-side football.

Acting SRC director-general Joseph Muchechetere said increasing the number of disciplines has always been their wish and the call by Vice President Nkomo was being taken seriously.

“While we cannot guarantee that we will have more disciplines next year in the Midlands, I must stress that that has always been our wish. The challenge remains the capacity to manage the expanded scope of the games,” said Muchechetere in a telephone interview from Harare.

He said the other challenge was shortage of skilled personnel to run the other sporting disciplines.

“If we have enough personnel and a minimum of four provinces come up with the same disciplines then we will certainly have them for our next competitions because if you remember we had about 500 athletes for our inaugural competition in Bulawayo and this year, we had 1 700 in Hwange which shows that the potential to grow is there,” said Muchechetere.

Most provinces do not have the capacity in terms of equipment for some of the disciplines that are already being competed for like wheelchair basketball and tennis and as such only four provinces had teams in the particular sporting disciplines.
