THE Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) wants an audience with Fifa before formal registration of the newly formed National Football Association of Zimbabwe (Nafaz). The country’s supreme sports body insisted last night that the dissolution of Zifa was within the mandate of its members, but said certain procedures had to be followed first so that the nation doesn’t find itself on a collision course with Fifa and other bodies.
SRC acting director general Joseph Muchechetere said it is prudent for them to engage Fifa to get an understanding in terms of their position following last Saturday’s decision.
“We want to talk together, us and Nafaz to Fifa, even though they (Nafaz) are telling us that they have since received communication from Fifa telling them on the steps to follow so that Zimbabwe remains a member of Fifa, but we also would want to engage them (Fifa). We’re trying to satisfy the law, not jump it,” said Muchechetere.
Nafaz president Philip Chiyangwa also confirmed yesterday that they had received communication from Fifa, but efforts to get the document were fruitless. Muchechetere said the new organisation has to satisfy the SRC by availing key documents ahead of registration.
“A running institution has been killed and we must be given reports in terms of accounts and so forth so that other offices that are part of this whole process like the Master of the High Court are also satisfied. One thing though we appreciate and understand is that these people had their reasons for disbanding Zifa. It is them who are saying Zifa has failed to operate as a going concern; they have all the rights to do that, the law supports and protects them,” said Muchechetere.
Chronicle Sport is reliably informed that the world football governing body wrote to Zifa giving them the go ahead to dissolve the association on April 21. “We didn’t take that route blindly, without any support from them (Fifa) and that’s in black and white,” said a source.
