IN a powerful moment of triumph and hope, St Columba’s High School last Friday honoured learners who excelled across various disciplines at its annual Speech and Prize Giving Day Ceremony.

Held under the theme, “Empowering the Future: The Convergence of Digitalisation, Science and Artificial Intelligence,” the event highlighted outstanding achievements, a renewed commitment to digital learning and an inspiring call for students to embrace the future.

Besides its outstanding performance in public examinations, both Zimsec and Cambridge, St Columba’s is also widely recognised as one of Zimbabwe’s leading institutions in technical and vocational education.

In his address, the headmaster, Reverend Canon Albert Ncube praised the unwavering dedication of staff and the consistent academic excellence that has become synonymous with the school.

“We are blessed with a seasoned team of teachers and non-teaching staff whose passion and professionalism drive learner success,” he said.

Rev Ncube also highlighted the impressive pass rates achieved over the past three years across major examination boards including Zimsec, Hexco and Cambridge.

The ceremony was more than just a celebration of academic and co-curricular success, it was also a moment of reflection on the divine source of talent and ability.

Mr Sylvester Machingura, chairperson of the School Development Committee (SDC), described the past year as one of strategic growth, technological advancement and strengthened partnerships.

“Academic excellence must be accompanied by good conduct, respect and responsibility,” he emphasised, commending learners for upholding the institution’s high standards both in and outside the classroom.

The guest of honour, Ms Sicelo Dube, who is the chief executive officer of Stem Lady Holdings, delivered a rousing keynote address, urging learners- particularly the outgoing Class of 2025- to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI), innovation and purposeful planning.

“The future is in your hands and you are not too young to innovate,” she said. “If you do not adopt or upskill, you will be left behind.”

She underscored the importance of values, discipline and integrity, reminding students that success requires careful planning, focus and a strong moral foundation.

During the event, students from different levels received certificates and gifts recognising their academic excellence and achievements.

O-level student Mvelo Nkomo, stood out by winning prizes in Physics, Computer Aided Design, Mathematics and Chemistry, earning the title of overall best Form Four student.

Students who excelled in sports and practical competitions were also honoured for their role in raising the school’s flag high.
