AS the festive season nears, Bulawayo is aglow with Christmas cheer — shopping areas sparkling with lights, festive decorations brightening public spaces and vendors stocking up on seasonal treats and ornaments.

Amid this festive buzz, the Rotary Club of Bulawayo, in partnership with the Bulawayo City Council (BCC), is set to host the annual Carols by Candlelight at the Amphitheatre on 28 November, bringing families and friends together to celebrate the season through music, joy and the spirit of giving.

The much-loved event will kick-start the Christmas celebrations while lending a helping hand to the city’s most vulnerable children. Entry is by donation, with all proceeds going directly to local children’s homes.

“Carols by Candlelight is all about spreading the joy of the season and giving back to those in need. We invite everyone to come, enjoy beautiful music and support a cause that touches lives across Bulawayo,” said a Rotary Club spokesperson.

The evening will bring together school bands, choirs and local musicians, creating a magical atmosphere as the amphitheatre glows with candlelight.

“The Mayor will officially light the ceremonial Christmas lights, marking the start of the festive season in the city.”
Each year, the Rotary identifies and supports children’s homes that house the most vulnerable, prioritising those with limited sponsorship.

“Donations in cash or kind, including groceries, clothing and other essentials, are warmly welcome,” the spokespersons.

Past editions of the event have drawn large crowds.
Before being adopted by the Rotary Club, the Carols by Candlelight programme was first staged in Bulawayo by John Barham and Miss Una Etheridge, supported by a small band. The event itself originated in Australia during the

1930s, created by renowned radio personality and broadcaster Norman Banks.
