The Saints, who provided half a dozen players to the Under-19 national team preparing for the Craven Week, were full value for their victory.

The game, which is an historical feature having been played for 100 years, attracted a huge crowd in the capital.

And those who turned up for the showdown were treated to a good show as the two giants traded blows and the scoreboard read 8-8 after the early blows had been traded.

Jabo Mutukwa struck the first points for the Saints before teammate Lebo Ngwenya touched down with the first try of the match.

The visitors fought back and drew level but the hosts stayed cool and Daniel Nyamugama, Francis Mubayiwa, Chris Tande and Thabani Mujeni all made meaningful contributions to the Saints’ cause.
Saints’ captain, Munyaradzi Mashaya, said the game was a bruising affair at the beginning and he did not anticipate such a big victory.

“We are very happy to win because the match was tough in the first half and we thought it was going to be hard for us to score many tries but we did it,” said Mashaya.

“In the second half we became more confident and the boys ensured we won. It was a good game.”
There are six players from St. George’s and one player from Prince Edward who made it into the Under-19 squad scheduled to take part at the Craven Week in South Africa next month.

Prince Edward sports director  Sebastian Garikai, who was is in charge of the Tigers, said although they lost this tie, his team will draw comfort from their performance this season.

“The boys did not win, but I am proud of them,” said Garikai.
“They played well and I am encouraged by the fact that they have managed to register five wins since the beginning of the season.
“So I am confident that they will win in their next games.”
