ST JOHN’S HIGH SCHOOL CHIKWAKA HOSTS 2026 ANGLICAN BISHOP MERIT AWARD CEREMONY

ANGLICAN Diocese of Harare schools gathered at St John’s High School Chikwaka last week for the 2026 Anglican Bishop Merit Award ceremony.

The award celebrates innovation, heritage-based learning and vocational excellence in education.

The Diocese of Harare CPCA confirmed its commitment to quality and practical education.

Chairperson of Anglican Diocese of Harare Schools Management Board, Letwina Warinda-Ndanga, said the Diocese continues to prioritise innovation, vocational skills and Christian values in its schools.

Mrs Warinda-Ndanga said the Schools Management Board has been working closely with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to ensure Anglican schools align with the country’s education policies and development goals.

She said schools are now focusing more on vocational training, innovation and industrialisation to equip learners with practical life skills and help fight poverty in communities.

“This year the SMB encouraged our schools to continue shifting teaching and learning focus in all our schools onto acquisition of vocational skills and competencies to produce goods and services towards the achievement of innovation and industrialisation.

“This approach gives our school leavers the opportunity to acquire relevant exit skills which they will use to enhance quality life and eradicate poverty in their communities.

“It is in support of this shared vision for relevant educational development that the SMB revisited yet again the school’s evaluation criteria for this year’s event and came up with more relevant expectations to be fulfilled by schools who are receiving the awards today.

“The approach gives school leavers relevant skills which they can use to improve their lives and contribute positively to society,” she said.

She said the Bishop’s Merit Award recognises schools that excel in infrastructure development, academic performance, innovation, environmental management, teamwork and the promotion of Anglican values.

She added that schools were also assessed on inclusivity, student participation, discipline, sport, arts and cultural development.

Mrs Warinda-Ndanga praised teachers, school administrators, School Development Committees and the church leadership for their dedication to improving education standards in Anglican schools. She also commended The Rt Rev Dr Farai Mutamiri, Bishop of The Anglican Diocese of Harare, for his vision in promoting quality education within the Diocese.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Rt Rev Dr Farai Mutamiri, said the Bishop’s Merit Award is a testament of the tireless efforts and selfless devotion among the esteemed recipients.

He said the honour is a unique development that the Anglican Diocese of Harare has introduced as a way of motivating schools to promote quality education, which they believe is an indelible contribution of the Anglican Church towards the education system.

Diocesan Education Secretary, Dr Lazarus Nyatsanza, commended all the schools which received awards for carrying the Anglican Diocesan’s flag high.

“I would like to express my gratitude to all the heads of the schools for their dedication, commitment and initiatives. The results of their effort is what we cherish today.

“The teachers have to be emulated for their commitment to work. Some of them are taking early morning lessons. The high pass rate in exams is testimony to the efforts directed by teachers towards teaching and learning,” he said.
