HARARE Provincial champions Stanbic can now lay claim to be one of the top volleyball clubs in Zimbabwe after they won the National Volleyball League by beating Midlands Tigers 3-1 in the men’s final at the University of Zimbabwe courts on Sunday.On their way to the final, Stanbic had overcome defending champions Support Unit 3-2 in the semi-finals and their coach Aaron Mutede said they were now focusing on conquering the region.
Stanbic players will today go into camp at Morris Depot to start preparations for the Zone Six Volleyball Club Championships set for Mbabane, Swaziland, from December 14 to 22.
“We are glad that we lifted the National Volleyball League and this adds to our provincial title we won earlier on.
“I must admit that it was not an easy win but we sailed through because we had experienced players like Nyasha Takawira who plays utility, Tawanda Pamire (setter), Douglas Choto (power and Batsirai Mawisire.
“Tigers have a good team because their players are tall although they lacked experience, save for Kali Chiwara, who plays for the national team.
“Now that we have won the National Volleyball League, focus is now on the Zone Six competitions next month. So far I have 18 players in camp but we will take only 12 for the trip to Swaziland,” said Mutede.
Stanbic team manager, Tongai Mahachi, said they were hopeful of going beyond the quarter-finals after bowing out at the same stages over the past two years.
“This will be our third consecutive appearance at the Zone Six Club Championships and we hope to bring a medal, at least.
