As we grow up, we make mistakes at home, in schools and social circles so we get hurt by others intentionally and unintentionally leading us becoming bitter. For some it does not end here, we find ourselves in very compromising situations.
Inflicting pain on your body is also not the right thing to do.
Girls seem to undergo more pain growing up as compared to the opposite sex. The reason, once a girl enters into a relationship, she gives her all and in any case they sacrifice a lot in the relationships.
Guys do get hurt too but with them, they turn to booze and drugs which they take solace in. Though drugs may not cause visible hurt at first they still produce self-harm.
Growing up in the hood was a young lady who could love easily because she thought her aunt (who was her mother), did not give her all the attention she needed. Instead of telling or talking to her, she eventually turned to guys, not just guys but older guys.
One particular guy had his own friends who were famous for sleeping around with anybody and seeing how the young lady would let lose at the words, “I love you”, they managed to sleep with her.
All five of these boys “got down dirty” with her. At the end of the day when she saw what happened she turned to the razor blade.
At sundown, a group of us went to check up on her and upon entering her room, we were surprised to find her cutting her hand with a sharp razor blade. Judging from how she did, it was not the first time either. Her left arm was almost full of cuts as if they were merits.
No one knew she did self-harm upon herself. It is dangerous because had she mistakenly cut a vein she could have died instantly. Her excuse!! “I do so because I don’t want my heart to feel the pain, rather my body.”
I recently met up with her three years after the incident. Rachel (not her real name) said: “The importance of opening up can make a difference in someone’s life.
“Can you imagine if you had not screamed at my self-punishment, my aunt could have found me dead and not know how I felt.”
Mary J (marijuana), coke (cocaine) and, of course, the hero (heroine) which is said to be the number one most dangerous drug have led to teenagers losing their lives.
These drugs are said to produce relief in a sense which is why guys turn to them. These are like stress relievers according to their abusers. This is self-harm in the sense that you are killing your body organs like the liver and kidneys.
Problems come when one becomes an addict to these drugs and cannot let go. More damage is done.
Steve from Budiriro said in a stuttering voice: “The problem with hard drugs is you fail to recognise even your own parent as you try to hide from drug abuse.
“They are no good but I just have to take them because if I don’t I lose my head.”
Total self-harm inflicted upon oneself
Getting back to the girls, when they are hurt by a boyfriend the tendency is to try and get back at him by engaging in several affairs in order to get him jealousy.
By so doing you are harming your mind, spirit and body. There is no difference with one that flashes their body to strangers for the love of money and in the process hurt more than just self.
Some guys turn to fighting or go for martial arts training because of their body image. “Bullied at a tender age leaves no one a choice but to try and be ready the next time this happens,” explained 17-year-old Blessing from Dzivarasekwa.
This is how we see that if the slightest argument comes up, he comes on strong because his past haunts him.
It is far much better to be open and tell someone what is going on in your life than to inflict pain on your body simply because you are scared to face the problem.
Running away will not get you anywhere so stand up, face that giant and beat it.
